Miriam Vogel Horst, 92, of Glen Arm, Maryland passed away on Thursday, November 12, 2009 at Glen Meadows Retirement Community in Glen Arm. She was born on August 9, 1917 in DeKalb, Illinois.
Mrs. Horst graduated from Batavia High School and attended the Batavia German Lutheran Church as a youth. After graduation, Mrs. Horst worked at the Chicago Northwestern Railroad Company in Chicago and later Operadio in St. Charles. It was while she was working at Operadio (later known as DuKane Corporation) that she met her husband, Albert W. Horst. After their son, Albert Jr, was born, the family moved to Geneva.
Mrs. Horst was active in the Geneva Lutheran Church for forty years and participated in local bridge, sewing, and other social organizations. She also enjoyed working as a bookkeeper for the Geneva Children’s Shop for more than a decade. Mrs. Horst and her husband celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1992. After her husband’s death, she moved to Maryland to be near her son’s family.
Survivors include her son Albert Horst, Jr. of Bel Air, Maryland; and granddaughters Laura Seltzer of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Susan Farr of Cape Town, South Africa.
Mrs. Horst was preceded in death by her parents, Max and Marie Vogel, and her siblings, Charles Vogel, Louise Johnson, Maxine Bartholomew, and Myrtle Sandberg.
Visitation will be Thursday, Nov. 19 from 9-11:00 AM at the Yurs Funeral Home 1771 West State St (Rte. 38) Geneva Illinois for 9-11. Funeral services will be at 11 am at the Funeral Home. Rev. Doug Opp of the Geneva Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in East Batavia Cemetery.
