OBITUARY

Susan Jane Smith, age 61, of Geneva, died Saturday, July 28, 2012 at Michaelsen Health Center in Batavia, following a three-month battle with brain cancer.

Susan was born January 31, 1951 in Peru, Illinois to Harold and Madalyn (Bruno) Schloesser. In 1972, Susan graduated from the St. Anthony Hospital School of Nursing in Rockford, Illinois. Susan was a registered nurse for over 30 years. Her first love in the nursing profession was in the field of psychiatry. This led her into the specialty area of Eating Disorders, working first at Mercy Center Hospital in Aurora, and then at Linden Oaks Hospital in Naperville. For Susan nursing was a labor of love, and not just her job. Her love and compassion for people, coupled with her easy disposition allowed her to be a positive force in so many lives.

In November of 1973 Susan married Steven Smith at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Peru. They made their home in Geneva for the last 34 years.

Along with her husband, Susan is survived but her son Adam, daughter-in-law Christina (Hixson), grandson Kade, and graddaughter Kaia all of Westminster, Colorado. Other family members include her mother, Madalyn Keffer of Peru; her sister and brother-in-law Beth and Eugene Hodges of LaSalle; her brother and sister-in-law Robert and Diane Keffer of Peru; nieces, Toya Hodges of Chicago, and Brooke and Britney Keffer of Peru; and nephews, Brock Keffer of Peru, and Neal Hodges of Jacksonville, Florida.

Susan also leaves behind many more very wonderful, and dear family members and friends; many who selflessly helped her, and her family, through her very difficult final battle with cancer.

Susan was preceded in death by her father Harold, and by her maternal grandparents Charles and Mary Bruno, and her paternal grandparents John and Marie Schloesser.

A private family service has already taken place. A memorial service for Susan is planned for late October.

In lieu of flowers, Susan’s wish was for donations to be made to the St. Mary Mission, P.O. Box 39, Tohatchi, New Mexico 87325, in care of Fr. Pio O’Connor, OFM.
